SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) - One team to keep a close eye on this May is Target Chip Ganassi Racing. It's dominated the series in the recent past, winning the last three IZOD IndyCar Series titles and six points championships overall with Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon.
The duo has also won the Indianapolis 500 a combined three times, but this season's been a struggle. Dixon is currently sixth in points after four races with Franchitti sitting in 10th place. Franchitti said he thinks his Honda-powered team is catching up to Chevy-powered Team Penske. There would be no better place to finally close the gap with Penske than at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a venue that still gives Franchitti butterflies.
"Even driving on the track a couple of days ago, it was like 9:15 at night and it was quiet, it still has the same effect on me," Franchitti said. "For opening day now, this is what it's all about. First time with these new cars, the DW12 on this track, what's it going to be like? It's going to be like the years past, but more so because of all the unanswered questions with this new car. How fast is it going to go? How is it going to race? It's going to be pretty cool."
Both Ganassi Racing and Team Penske are easing their way into the month of May, turning very little laps on opening day.
"You've got to focus on the job at hand," Franchitti said. "Our job is to work with the Target guys and come up with the best possible car for qualifying, then the race and see if we can run up front."
