Race Preview: Hydro X Prix

Chip Ganassi Racing’s GMC HUMMER EV team will travel across the pond this weekend to compete in Extreme E’s Hydro X Prix. The third and fourth races of the year will take place in Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, at a former opencast coal mine.

RJ Anderson and Amanda Sorensen made their official debut together in early March, where they scored 21 points across the Desert X Prix race weekend. They made an impressive splash on to the scene in the first heat of Qualifying 1, where they posted the session’s best overall time.

The team will enter Scotland fifth in the standings, but with plenty of ground to gain given the new doubleheader race format across this year’s calendar.

“This is my first time ever traveling to Europe, as a matter of fact, so this race in Scotland is pretty epic for me,” said Anderson. “Amanda and I learned a lot in rounds one and two and we worked together well as a team. That was very positive and we’re looking forward to Scotland. We’ve been working with the team on getting ourselves faster as drivers, as well as the set-up on the car. Really excited for what this weekend has in store and our eyes are focused on the podium.”

The Scottish circuit will feature a combination of both fast sections on grass as well as drops into a quarry.

"This is going to be a very good race. We just did the track walk and it's very big with high speeds and different terrains that we'll be driving on. We'll have gravel, wet mud and grassy hills." said Sorensen. "It's kind of like a rally or short course, but I think for me I'll have to adjust to the windshield and dealing with the mud. I'm excited, though, and the team is doing very well. We're as prepared as we can be and we'll stick to the plan and set a good pace."

Glenmuckloch, the restored opencast former coal mine, will next undergo a transformation into a pumped storage hydropower and wind farm. The facility will generate enough clean energy to power roughly 300,000 homes and will help Scotland reach its goal of generating 50 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.

In the U.S. the round three final can be seen on Fox Sports 2 on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. ET. You can then catch the round three final on Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. ET.
